Mizuki Yono is one of the protagonists of This Used to be About Dungeons, the party's Sorcerer.

Personality[]

At 22, still tends to think of herself as a girl rather than an adult.[1] [2]

Reputation[]

Mizuki is fairly well-known and well-liked around Pucklechurch,[3] although considered a bit irresponsible.[4]

Appearance[]

22.[1] Round-facesd, with small eyes and nose. Of Kiromoan descent on her father's side, she has darker skin than is common in the region and a slight downward slant to her eyes. Her hair is cropped just below her chin, with long bangs that threaten to cover her eyes.[5]

Equipment[]

In her first appearance, she was dressed for running around a boggy area: culottes, a sleeveless wrap top, and special stilt-like clogs of her own design to keep her from getting wet when her feet sank into the boggy bits, with a simple cloth bag that went over her shoulder for her stuff,[6] such as a hooded cloak for when it gets cold,[7] a loop of string with some rings on it,[8] etc. She wore much the same outfit the next day, with tidier hair and lipstick, sandals, and a small dagger on her belt for adventuring flair.[9][10]

For the first dungeon, she reluctantly purchased and wore a pair of boots and gloves that went almost to her elbows.[11]

History[]

Mizuki was born in Pucklechurch to a local mother and Kiromoan father.

She made her living doing odd jobs as a Sorcerer.[12] Mizuki would frequently attempt to catch will-o-wisps at twilight on the outskirts of Pucklechurch.[3]

  1. 1.0 1.1 “And it feels weird to call her a woman. We’re the same age.”
    “My apologies,” replied Alfric.
“No, it’s fine,” said Mizuki. “It’s probably fair. I just think of myself as a girl, still. I don’t feel like an adult.” According to the censusmaster, she was twenty-two. - Chapter 1: The Fig and Gristle
  2. “Verity doesn’t like the mornings, but I’m not going to sit here all day waiting for her to get up.” [...] Verity opened her door and poked her head out. Alfric was surprised by how similar she looked to Mizuki, with her hair messy, a frown on her face, and a squint. Unlike Mizuki, she had gotten into a dress instead of a robe, one that had a pattern of white flowers on top of lavender fabric. It was slightly wrinkled. “What time is it?” she asked. “Just past second bell,” said Alfric. “Oh,” she said, looking between the two of them. Her bleary eyes finally rested on Mizuki. “I don’t usually get up until at least fourth bell.” - Chapter 2: Big City Energy
  3. 3.0 3.1 Alfric found Mizuki where he expected her to be, chasing will-o-wisps in the forest. It was something she often did just after dark, once the will-o-wisps were out, but while there was still some residual light. All this was according to some people around town. They had spoken highly of her, if they knew her, which most of them seemed to. It wasn’t particularly hard to find her: all he had to do was to wait until he saw a flash of light, then move toward it. - Chapter 1: The Fig and Gristle
  4. “What are you doing in Pucklechurch of all places?” she asked. “And if you’re with Mizuki, then I just know Isra is in trouble,” but she said it with a little laugh and a smile. [...] “Mizuki’s a firecracker,” said Marta, from behind Alfric. “Nice girl, but not too responsible with her magic.” - Chapter 3: Venison and Honey
  5. From what Alfric had been able to find out, she was local to the town, but her mother had been from far-off Kiromo, which showed on Mizuki’s face. She had a round face, darker skin, small eyes, a small nose, and a slight downward slant to her eyes. Her hair was cropped short, to just below her chin, and she had long bangs that threatened to block her vision. - Chapter 1: The Fig and Gristle
  6. Mizuki wore culottes that stopped just above her knees, looking like a skirt when she was still, but short pants when she was in motion. Her upper body had a garment that wrapped around her, leaving her arms bare. As the will-o-wisps favored the boggy areas of the forest, she was wearing clogs of her own design, with a heel high enough that her feet wouldn’t get wet where the grass and moss sank down. [...] She walked over to a tree, which had a simple cloth bag hanging down from one branch. After she grabbed it and threw it over her shoulder, she came closer to Alfric, and slipped her arm into his. - Chapter 1: The Fig and Gristle
  7. Mizuki reached into her bag and pulled out a hooded cloak, which she quickly wrapped around herself, covering her bare arms. - Chapter 1: The Fig and Gristle
  8. She reached into her bag and pulled out a thick string, which had dozens of rings on it. She undid the knot without even looking at it, and began quickly counting out rings. - Chapter 3: Venison and Honey
  9. Mizuki came back into the kitchen not long after she’d left, wearing a similar outfit to the day before, a wrap on top that left her arms bare, and pants that ended at her calves and had such wide legs that they were practically a skirt, this time a dark blue. In addition, she had a small belt that provided an anchor for a dagger in a sheath, which she hadn’t had the day before. She had also spent some time fixing her hair, and she’d applied lipstick, making her look much more put together than she’d seemed while making breakfast, or the night before. Her bag was her final addition. “I thought it would help me look serious,” she said, gesturing to the dagger. “Like an adventurer.” “Your job won’t be to stab things,” said Alfric, frowning. “Durr,” said Mizuki, sticking out her tongue. “But it looks cool, right?” “I guess,” said Alfric. “Verity will think it looks cool, I bet,” said Mizuki. - Chapter 2: Big City Energy
  10. “I’ve got a cloak,” said Mizuki, pulling it from her bag to show Hannah. “Besides, Alfric has been very clear that he’ll protect us.” “You’re wearin’ culottes and sandals,” said Hannah, looking down at Mizuki’s feet. “How’s Alfric to protect you from insects and mud, ay?” - Chapter 4: Three Raccoons
  11. “I put on some boots and gloves,” said Mizuki, extending her hands to display. “I don’t know what anyone else expects of me.” Other than those two additions, she was dressed the same as she’d been before, with her arms completely bare except for the gloves, which went up almost to her elbows. - Chapter 4: Three Raccoons
  12. “You would all keep your jobs, whatever they might be. It was my understanding that you were in the business of odd jobs anyway?” “Well me I understand,” said Mizuki. - Chapter 2: Big City Energy
